AgroAmerica researches to eradicate diseases in the southwestern region of Guatemala

In 2014, AgroAmerica allied with the University of Colorado in the United States, and FUNSALUD, built a Health Research Center in the southwestern region of Guatemala.

Since then, the Center has carried out various studies to measure the incidence of diseases that most affect the area, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, diarrhea, norovirus, respiratory infections, and Covid-19, to develop action plans to eradicate them.

The Center also conducts training for health personnel in the area and community leaders on disease prevention. Each year an average of 20 private and government institutions are trained.

The investigations are carried out through a Consultative Committee, formed by 35 community leaders from 12 communities in Retalhuleu, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango. The committee meets three times annually to discuss health issues affecting the region and determine what studies to perform to eradicate the diseases. The Consultative Committee also cooperates with the University of Colorado to gather information for each research project.

This Research Center is part of the AgroAmerica Human Development Center, located in Retalhuleu, which provides medical services in the area.

“The Research Center responds to the needs detected in our CSR and sustainability strategy in the health issue. We seek to contribute to eradicating the diseases that most affect the area through prevention and therefore help to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ”said AgroAmerica CEO Fernando Bolaños Valle.
