Agroamerica undertook a project to strengthen the dialogue between Union and Management

Guatemala, August 2009. Agroamerica, together with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and CentraRSE, leading organizations in Corporate Social Responsibility, undertook the project “Creating a Process of Constructive Dialogue between union workers and management” to strengthen communication among union, non-union workers, and management; thus achieving an effective interaction answering to the needs of all.

The methodology consisted of a series of workshops under the theme: “The value of investing in strengthening relations”; these were able to identify topics in common to generate improvements in the union-employer relationship that will have a positive effect on work conditions, competitiveness, and in the access to different markets.
Human Resources Manager of Agroamérica indicated: “Achieving multi-sectoral dialogue between senior management and employees is a challenge for any company, contributing to the improvement of the working environment and good relations between employers and employees that will also foster the competitiveness of the company. Among the benefits expected are: to create formal long-term relationships, improve communications, and create a greater trust between farm workers and management, to create an attitude of interworking, increase productivity of the farm, and above all to improve work environment”.

Most participants of this project believed that it would be of great benefit because it would help them work as a team, find new and better ways to work, more ideas, and innovation to increase sales and decrease losses, and it would also serve as a motivation to strive to create a suitable and pleasant work environment.

Agroamérica brings the light to school in Huitzizil Village

Guatemala, June 2009. For the students of Escuela Rural Mixta of Huitzizil Village, their school day won’t be the same. Since June 17, 2009, their classrooms have lighting, one of the most critical physical characteristics of a school.

According to this, Agroamérica, which is committed to support local communities, donated electric power to the village’s school. In addition, the school was painted, areas such as the main entrance and the basketball court were repaired, and the construction of a new fence was made.

With this project, more than 240 students from the Huitzizil Village benefited and enjoy a new school environment where they can now study and pursue their daily activities.

This and other projects are part of the company’s commitment and corporate social responsibility programs, aimed to support local communities through the reparation and creation of infrastructure that permits the improvement of their living conditions while encouraging them to participate in the development of their own communities.

Agroamérica repairs infrastructure of Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta in San Francisco Madre Vieja village

Guatemala, June 2009. Aiming to improve the conditions of students of the village San Francisco Madre Vieja, Agroamerica repaired parts of the installations of the village?s school, Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta, located in Tiquisate, Escuintla.

The school had serious roof damage, it presented holes where water, litter and sunlight easily entered, making it difficult for both teachers and students to follow the class dynamics. To solve the problem, the old foil sheets were replaced by new ones that do not allow the sunlight to go through.

In addition to this repair and thinking about the safety of students, a fence was built around the school to prevent children from leaving the area and crossing the Madre Vieja River, as it is a very dangerous step.

With the support of Agroamerica, always committed with the community to improve their living conditions, the population of San Francisco Madre Vieja village has a school in conditions in which their students can attend classes and enjoy the facilities without any trouble.

Agroamerica, bridge reparation re-established vehicular traffic towards Las Trozas Village.

Guatemala, May 2009. Aiming to restore vehicular communication and benefit the local community, the bridge from Las Trozas village, which connected three villages in the area, was repaired.

The bridge, which was rebuilt with the support of the company Agroamérica, had a hole of 2.5 meters wide by 3 meters long, preventing communication with the town.

The inhabitants of the region, about 3,500 people, expressed their satisfaction with the project, since the lack of infrastructure made difficult the performance of daily activities like going to the workplace, the market or to resolve an emergency.

Agroamérica invested Q14 a thousand in the project, which helped to reestablish the communication and access to Huitzizil, Las Trozas and San Francisco Madre Vieja villages. The reactivation of this main route connects several area farms and public transportation, which allows people from the banana plantations.

This and other projects are part of the company’s commitment to support local communities through the reparation and creation of infrastructure that permits the improvement of their living conditions while encouraging them to participate in the development of their own communities.
