In Honor of World Food Day, AgroAmerica Releases Promising Findings From Their Nutritious School Meal Program

The Nutritive School Refreshment program: “A banana a day changes your life” aims to improve the well-being of children and their school performance, through daily supplies of nutritious food to students in the communities close to the operations of the business. As part of this initiative, AgroAmérica donates a banana a day to each student, to the 16 participating schools to complement the students’ school lunch with healthy foods.

Launched just two years ago, the project has grown rapidly. It started with 2 schools and to date there are 16 schools and more than 4,000 students benefited. Participating teachers have reported that tests reveal that school performance has improved dramatically with most students. In San José Mogollón they see an increase in grades of 24% 22% in mathematics and language, respectively in 2013. It revealed that their overall dropout rate dropped by more than 60%. Malnutrition indicators also improved notably, there was a 34% improvement in the growth curves.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations –FAO-, one in nine people, worldwide, still face hunger and food insecurity every day. AgroAmérica is committed to helping change and improve those numbers.

No child should go to school on an empty stomach, “says AgroAmérica’s Corporate Director, Bernardo Roehrs. AgroAmérica expects to expand the project to other schools and communities throughout 2016.
