Reparación de la borda del Rio Mico

Agroamerica reinforced the riverbanks of the Mico River to protect the communities from flooding

Agroamerica reinforced the riverbanks of the Mico River to protect the communities from flooding

Guatemala, May 2012. Agroamerica collaborated with community leaders and rural villages to repair the riverbanks and dredge the Mico River in the town of Huitzitzil, Tiquisate, Escuintla. The company invested last year $6,000.00 U.S. dollars to help dredging the river and building up the riverbanks.

This riverbank reinforcement will benefit five communities that are isolated by the flooding of the Mico River. With the arrival of the rainy season, the inhabitants of these communities live in fear of having their homes and possessions carried away by flood waters in this disaster prone area.

The villages benefitted from this project are Huitzitzil, San Francisco Madre Vieja, Las Trozas, El Semillero and Ticanlú in the Municipality of Tiquisate, Escuintla. The inhabitants of these towns and the Mayor of Tiquisate expressed their appreciation for Agroamerica’s help and support.

Agroamerica, the Fernando Bolaños Foundation, through the Order of Malta, obtained a donation for the Valle de los Angeles orphanage

Guatemala, April 2012. The Fernando Bolaños Foundation organized a donation of food and basic necessities from the Order of Malta for the Valle de Los Angeles orphanage, located just outside Guatemala City.

140 children benefited from the donation which included beans, cereal, baby food, chocolate, pancake mix, laundry detergent, body cream, blankets, and personal hygiene kits.

The orphanage is supported by local and international donations. The children in the orphange come from some of the poorest communities in the country in the departments of Petén, Jutiapa, Jalapa, Zacapa, Sololá, Totonicapán and Guatemala.

Vicky de Díaz, orphanage assistant, commented, “The donation will help a lot. The food will supplement our existing menus to help feed the children. As well, the orphanage is located in an area that has a relatively cold climate, so the blankets will be very useful. We’ll use the chocolates as prizes for the cleaning contests that we have among the children.”

Prevención del VIH/SIDA AgroAmérica

Agroamerica trained 4,000 community leaders and employees in AIDS prevention

Agroamerica trained 4,000 community leaders and employees in AIDS prevention

Guatemala, April 2012. Agroamerica, together with the Independent Anti-AIDS Committee, delivered 43 AIDS prevention workshops with a focus on family values. More than 4,000 employees from the banana and palm plantations in the departments of Escuintla, Retalhuleu, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango benefitted from this training.

Over the course of two weeks, two doctors from the Anti-AIDS Committee conducted the workshops at the plantations and packing plants. The doctors emphasized that the best ways to prevent the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus are abstinence and/or marital fidelity. Using a condom is a method of last resort because it is not 100% reliable and does not prevent other diseases.

“The purpose of these workshops is to create a change in the behavior, attitudes and beliefs of our employees by instilling them with the positive values which this company embraces—the final result being an improvement in their quality of life”, said Bernardo Roehrs, corporate director of the company. “As well, we want to help Guatemala meet the Millenium Development Goals; one of them is to combat HIV/AIDS”, stressed the director.

The vast majority of the company’s employees had never before heard of the AIDS virus. Wilson Ajtún, a banana packing plant worker said, “This workshop was excellent; I never knew that AIDS existed. I want to thank Agroamerica for providing us with these educational lectures and, above all, for teaching us how to protect ourselves from this disease. Now, I know how to avoid catching AIDS.”

Agroamerica donated more than 14,000 bananas to the Subida por la Vida climb of the Agua Volcano

Agroamerica donated more than 14,000 bananas to the Subida por la Vida climb of the Agua Volcano

Guatemala, January 2012. More than 18,000 people climbed the Agua Volcano to participate in the Subida por la Vida initiative (Climb for Life) to raise awareness against violence in Guatemala. The activity was organized by the Jóvenes por Guatemala movement (Youth for Guatemala) and the British Embassy as part of the campaign Break the Cycle: Teach love, not violence.

“We supported this activity by donating bananas because we want to promote a positive change in our society, so that it is safer and more stable”, said Agroamerica’s Commercial Vice President, José Gálvez.

Organizers of the event were expecting no more than 10,000 people, but the massive participation of Guatemalans exceeded all expectations. During the climb the first human chain in the world to connect the base and summit of a volcano was formed. Event organizer and Coordinator of Jóvenes por Guatemala, Pedro Cruz, explained that the objective of the activity was to raise awareness about the importance of preventing family violence in Guatemala, which is one of the most prevalent forms of violence in the country. He also said that the money raised would be given to an NGO dedicated to fighting family violence. “I thank Agroamerica for believing in the project and for believing that we all have to join forces to prevent violence”, he added.

Mariluz Maza, a young participant who climbed the volcano, remarked that this event allowed her to realize how many Guatemalans, like herself, dream with a Guatemala with no violence. “I believe that without the support of companies such as Agroamerica this event could not have been possible. This demonstrates that there are companies committed to building a better Guatemala”, she said.

Similarly, event co-organizer and British Ambassador Julie Chappell said enthusiastically: “Supporting this event was exiting because we believe that we can, through a generational change, reduce the alarming levels of violence in Guatemala. As youth leaders say, less violence also means more freedom for those seeking to develop Guatemala’s great potential.”
