Secretario Ejecutivo de la -CONRED-

Agroamerica together with community leaders from the Southwest Tripoint of Guatemala received a visit from the Executive Secretary of the National Coordinator for the Reduction of Disasters (CONRED)

Agroamerica together with community leaders from the Southwest Tripoint of Guatemala received a visit from the Executive Secretary of the National Coordinator for the Reduction of Disasters (CONRED)

Guatemala, July 2011. Alejandro Maldonado, the Executive Secretary of CONRED met in Chiquirines, Ocós, San Marcos with leaders from sixteen communities from Retahuleu, Quetzaltenango and San Marcos, together with representatives from Agroamérica.

The purpose of the meeting was to express the needs of these communities to CONRED?s Executive Secretary. Agroamérica has always been concerned with the well-being of the people who live in the vicinity of its operations and for this reason, they organized the meeting between the community leaders and this important governmental organization to negogiate the help the residents need to prepare for the rainy season.

Agroamérica has become the principal source of aid for twenty-one tripoint communities. They have helped the residents organize a local branch of CONRED to coordinate the relief efforts during disaster situations. They have also financed and organized training workshops with CONRED to teach community leaders how to react in emergency situations. Agroamérica invested $47,500.00 to reconstruct the banks of the Ocosito river to prevent flooding, helped community leaders secure governmental loans to dredge the Pacayá river, and helped obtain emergency relief equipment to prepare for this year?s rainy season which has already begun.

Some of the needs expressed by community leaders include the dredging of the Ocosito, Pacayá, and Naranjo rivers. These rivers overflow their banks every rainy season, flooding the local crops and communities. Other needs include first aid kits, flashlights, and portable and stationary battery-powered radios to be able to communicate when the power goes out. Santos Díaz, a leader from Valle Lirio, expressed his appreciation for the visit from Secretary Maldonado and requested that their petitions be recognized and processed.

“We have been abandoned by the Government; we cannot count on any type of help from them; we are anxiously awaiting a response from them for our request to dredge the local rivers. Agroamérica has become our only source of help.” Nancy Reyes, president of COCODE and deputy mayor of El Pomal commented, “We want to be heard and we want help to find a solution to the problem of the Ocosito riverbanks. Agroamérica has already helped us with the repairs, but we still need help to continue to maintain the integrity of the riverbanks because if this situation is allowed to degrade, it will cause great losses to the surrounding residents.”

Agroamérica collaborates with the repair of the Pacayá River

Guatemala, June, 2011. Last month, the Goverment started dredging the mouth of the Pacayá River, located in San Rafael Pacayá, Quetzaltenango. The purpose is to avoid the flooding that occurs in the area during Guatemala’s rainy season from May to November. Agroamérica collaborated with the Southwest Tripoint Association to petition the government for help with this recurring problem.

In 2010, more than 300 community leaders from the departments of Retalhuleu, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango, all located within the Southwestern Tripoint, together with Banasa, met with the President’s Secretary for Special Projects to discuss the need to dredge the barrier beaches at the mouths of the Pacayá, El Naranjo, and Ocosito Rivers. This dredging will alleviate the local flooding by improving the flow of these rivers toward the Pacific Ocean.

The communities located in the municipalities of Ocós, Coatepeque and Retalhuleu (La Blanca, Pueblo Nuevo, Río Bravo, Cerritos, Salinas I, Salinas II, Las Morenas, Chiquirines, Barillas, Palmar I, Palmar II, Madronales, Los Encuentros, Santa Fe, Valle Lirio, La Blanquita, El Reparo, El Troje, Caballo Blanco) will all benefit greatly from this project.

Agroamérica also supports the local authorities with the project aimed at rebuilding the banks of the Ocosito River to avoid the destruction caused when the river overflows during the rainy season.

Marleny Vásquez, a resident of one of the local communities, demonstrated her appreciation to Agroamérica and the Southwest Tripoint Association: “May God bless you because this project is a miracle. We have suffered greatly from the flooding every year. An additional benefit of this project will be the ability to use the sand that is removed through the dredging process to fill the land where I want to build my house.”

Felino Sandoval, President of the Southwest Tripoint Association, communicated his satisfaction with the project and thanked the governmental authorities, the local communities and Agroamérica for their support.

Agroamérica organized a clean-up day in the community San José Mogollón

Guatemala, June, 2011. As part of Agroamérica’s corporate responsibility program and Better Families program, a clean-up day was organized in San Jose Mogollon, Nueva Concepción, Escuintla. Many people from the community participated including the director, teachers and students from the local school and women, leaders, and members of COCODE.

The activity began with an instructional workshop which taught the importance of sanitation to the participants. The cleaning crews then took the streets of town carrying signs and banners to raise awareness of the importance of a clean community. The village leaders and mothers carried brooms, dustpans, and other paraphernalia needed to “get the job done.” Agroamérica donated bags and transportation to remove all of the garbage collected.

The garbage that included tires, plastic, and organic waste was transported to the municipal garbage dump in Nueva Concepción, Escuintla. This clean-up will prevent the spread of intestinal diseases by flying insects and other vermin. An additional positive outcome of this activity was the education of the community to take care of the environment and to work together for their mutual benefit.

This activity fulfilled two thematic objectives of the Better Families program for women from the local farm communities: “With better families, comes better health” and “Working for everyone’s good health.”

Agroamerica launches the project “Learning with Computers” to benefit children in rural communities in Guatemala

Agroamerica launches the project “Learning with Computers” to benefit children in rural communities in Guatemala

Guatemala, May, 2011. Agroamérica, together with the Ministry of Education, Microsoft, and the Sergio Paiz Foundation (FUNSEPA) an NGO that contributes to social and economic development projects in Guatemala, has created the first computer lab for a school located in rural Guatemala. This lab will benefit the 221 children who attend the San Francisco Madre Vieja School located in Tiquisate, Escuintla. This community has a total population of 654 people, half of which are under the age of 15.

With this computer lab, Agroamérica opened up a new world of communication to students and the entire community because the laboratory will also be available in the evenings as an Internet cafe. The Internet café concept will generate an income that can be used to make the lab self-sustaining and pay for the maintenance of the equipment. The community will be able to use the Internet to communicate with relatives living outside of Guatemala.

The computers are installed with programs that address the content of Guatemala’s Basic National Curriculum, and Agroamérica is working with FUNSEPA to provide technical training for the school teachers and the community leaders.

Agroamérica was awarded the “Contribution to the Rural Community” presented annually by the Guatemalan American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in the Education category.

Gustavo Bolaños, president of the plantation division of Agroamérica, stated: Through our CSR programs, we support several schools. This current project will be especially successful because the children have not yet had the opportunity to operate a computer, and technology plays an important role in the world today.

Agroamérica is a company that cares for its employees and the communities that surround its operations. We are especially dedicated to the children of our employees and believe it is essential to provide them with a solid education. For this reason we are collaborating with other organizations also dedicated to this cause.

premio de contribución a la comunidad AgroAmérica

Agroamerica receives the award in the Education category for “Contribution to the Community” from AmCham

Agroamerica receives the award in the Education category for “Contribution to the Community” from AmCham

Guatemala, February, 2011. Agroamerica was the winner of an award given annually by the Guatemalan American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham, on February 10th at the Hotel Princess Reforma. The corporation’s work and dedication was recognized in the educational category with the award, “Contribution to the Community.”

Agroamerica participated with their project, “Learning with the Computer.” The goal of this project was to create a functioning computer lab for students in a public school in San Francisco Madre Vieja, a village located in Tiquisate, Escuintla. The school already had sixteen computers which had been previously donated, but the computers were in need of repair and the school lacked a room to adequately house the computer lab. Agroamerica, in partnership with the Sergio Paiz Foundation -FUNSEPA- repaired the existing computers, outfitted a new computer lab with educational DVDs and educational software programs, repaired and upgraded the lab’s electrical wiring, painted the facilities, and installed air conditioning to keep the machines at the appropriate temperature and extend their functional life. Now, the school has an appropriate setting in which the children may learn using computers.

The President of Agroplantations, thanked the representatives from AmCham when he received the award on behalf of Agroamerica. “Thank you for this recognition. Through our corporate responsibility programs, we support a variety of schools. “Learning with the Computer” was one of our pilot programs in San Francisco Madre Vieja village, a small town with very few resources. It was very successful because the children had never had the opportunity to work and study with computers before.

Carolina Castellanos, Executive Director of AmCham Guatemala, believes that these awards help to encourage businesses to participate in community development projects. “Because the awards are given in a variety of different categories, the participating companies can plan and develop projects which will benefit the communities where they do business and where their employees live and work.

These awards recognize AmCham member companies who participate in social programs that support community development in environmental, educational, and social fields. This is the eighth year AmCham has given out these awards.

AmCham is the largest business and trade organization in the world. It has many international branches that promote free and unfettered global commerce.

Agroamerica cares about its employees and the communities where they live. Above all, they care about children and the quality of the education they receive. That is the reason why the company develops projects whose goals are to improve the quality of life for both children and the communities in which they live.

“With our award-winning project -Learning with the Computer-, we helped students and teachers learn to use the latest technology with the hopes that they, in turn, would pass on that knowledge to their community”, stated the president of Agroamerica.

Agroamerica donates used ink cartridges to raise funds to equip schools

Guatemala, January 2012. Throughout 2011 Agroamerica collected used ink cartridges from all its farms and administrative offices, and donated them to the “Hasta el último cartucho” (Until the last cartridge) project of the Sergio Paiz Andrade Foundation (FUNSEPA), to be recycled and sold to raise funds to buy equipment for public schools.

With this initiative Agroamerica is contributing to the conservation of the environment -by recycling the cartridges and supporting the country’s education at the same time-.

Nancy Beza, FUNSEPA’s Marketing and Fund Raising Coordinator said that with the money raised from selling the cartridges several public elementary schools were fitted with computers. “We have helped more than 300,000 children in 769 schools in several regions of Guatemala. We know that technology is the bridge to progress, and thanks to companies such as Agroamerica, which donated these cartridges, we are reaching more kids”, commented Beza.

Conscious of the importance of recycling and helping education as well, all Agroamerica employees contributed to this initiative by donating their used ink cartridges. With this assistance Agroamerica demonstrates it is a socially responsible company which contributes to Guatemala’s social and economic development, using technology as a tool to further education.
